Intimacy

The dictionnary defines "intimacy" as "close or warm friendship",
but the word has become synonymous with sexual relations.
Without the former, however, the latter are not intimate at all. As we have seen in the creation story, the man sins in the area of relationship and, unless the benefits of redemption touch his life, he will always have struggles in this area. Some men find it difficult to express their feelings. Many find it impossible to admit weakness. But for real sexual intimacy, vulnerability -that original Adam-like nakedness - is essential, otherwise, even with marriage, the sex act is simply a way of satisfying the appetite, as members of the animal kingdom do. There is no such thing as "making love" to anyone as closed down and shut off as a snail.

Yet no human being, sexually active or not, can survive without intimacy. Single and celibate, Jesus nonetheless had a number of intimates - John, who lay at the Last Supper with his head on Jesus's breast; Peter and the other disciples, with whom he could be transparently honest and completely himself; Mary and Martha, whose company he sought when he wanted to unwind. If we cannot find intimacy as a single person,we will never find it in marriage, and certainly not in sex.
Jesus never mocked or patronized women because he had no axe to grind, no uneasy male dignity to defend. He was completely relaxed, completely unselfconscious with them. No wonder they were the first at the cradle, the first apostle, last at the cross and first at the resurection.Jesus is the man who made women feel special.

In his gospel, John tells us that it was Mary of Bethany who poured perfume all over Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. What made Mary do such an extraordinary thing in public? Luke describes a very similar event in his gospel and says the woman in question had a reputation for having "lived a sinful life". One thing is sure: whoever she was,only a prostitute would let her hair hang loose outside the privacy of her own bedroom. This may have been a spontaneous act of gratitude for the fact that she was restored, whole and free, a declaration that she wasn't going to submit to a life of shame anymore. Or perhaps it was an opportunity for the abused to show the abusers that she was no longer in their power. Bethany was a small place and in that room, there could have well been men who had known her.
Having experienced the worst kind of subjection, she now knew the greatest kind of liberty. She was so caught up in her love for Jesus that she didn't give a fig for convention, or what anyone would think of her, but like Ruth and Esther before her, she risked her reputation to do what she had to do. It was an uncomfortable situation. Mary's striking behaviour had rather erotic overtones, but Jesus was comfortable enough with his own sexuality not to be disturbed by it. He didn't say," stop making an exhibition of yourself woman. You're embarrassing me!" Instead he saw the intention behind the gesture, and accepted it for what it was - an expression of pure love. Theirs was an intimate, yet utterly safe relationship. He welcomed the tears and kisses, the warm, physical display of affection. Then he said he only wished men would respond to him as freely.
All Jesus relationships with women are characterized by that same easy, loving acceptance and rejection of stereotypes. Anyone who does his will is his brother, sister and mother, Jesus says without gender distinction. Jesus doesn't only raise the status of women. He raises the status of all humanbeings by showing them what God intended them to be.
Ironically, our culture is comfortable about sex but not about being men and women.
We are bodies! We are not nobodies!
Here is a real challenge of the Church - to provide loving, joyful, colourful communities where women and men can come to terms with their sexuality in its widest sense. For if sexuality is about self-acceptance at its deepest level, integrating our body with the rest of our being and enjoying the many sensations of pleasure it can yield, if it means loving ourselves so that we can love others, then Christianity has a great deal to offer.
The Christian community can be a safe place where all people, male and female, married or single, find healing, restoration and joy.

It started at 8 and finished too late...
obviously I am the hardcore one who stayed until 2am, ....hum
...hum, the guys deserted around 0:30am but they were game...and it was great fun!
I always prefer my sketches to the finished product.
To me they capture the essence of what I want to convey.
I see them as more alive, more vibrant and full of movement.

It's always best at night with the back lit effect.

oh, and the little element at the bottom to follow through all the panels...

Black History Month

I was invited to have 3 teaching sessions with the children of a local school in Year 2, 3 and 6.
I read books to them and talked through visual aids I had prepared to explore illustration, colour mixing and skin colour. This gave them the opportunity to think about how they perceive people and how to depict people in visual art.

This book is the best find (so far) in tackling the prejudice that people are divided into races . The story is told by a boy called Tyler whose parents appear different and are labelled by others, so he wonders if he is also black or white or another colour...

I explained to the children how skin is made, what it's made of and what gives it its colour.
Basically skin is tranparent , we all have the same skin, just a different dose of melanin.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanin

We had a look at basic color knowledge.
Primary and the Secondary colors created from the primary ones.

The children looked at variations of bright, warm and cool browns

The children started undestanding that artists can use the primary colors to create an infinite range of browns

..and that these "browns" can be used to represent skin colours without using any black or white

The children had a look at books used by artists and art appreciators about colour mixing and portraits.

The children were able to handle a self-portrait and look up close at the effects produced by colour mixing.

The children had children books to read and were encouraged to notice the use of colour by the illustrators to depict skin.

Belonging Community Identity

I worked on a community art project for Acton Green Church which was very exciting.

I was given these words: handprint/outline.
So FREEDOM!!!Freedom to allow the vision to come through to create a communal visual expression.
These were the ideas worked through the project:

- themes of belonging, community and identity
- the dove/bird used in it's simplicity as it is a recognised symbol of christianity
- a nonthreatening activity that is inclusive and allows time to chat and get to know each other
- a tactile experience that involves the participant in sharing part of his/her identity
- Identity in the body (hand outline) and the soul (art done on the handoutline) shared with others in a piece of art
- the participant free to use words and/or imagery to construct a visual representation of identity
- facilitating conversation to connect and reconnect people in the church community
- an opportunity to witness and share my testimony
- the joy of serving brothers and sisters in Christ who meet in another part of Acton

There were about 60 hands/feathers at the end of the activity.

Highlights: arriving and seeing the bird had fallen off the wall during the night, meeting Jo and Molly, tucking in 2 bacon butties, Caroline asking me to do an artistic pose for a photograph, Veronique' s master facepaintings, watching ballons fly so up in the sky and hoping ours gets the furthest for the competition (and not knowing what the prize is!).

Mid-September 2008, in a time of prayer, God gave me these visions.

They were so unusual that i tought i had to record them on paper straight away in case the meaning came later, but mostly because the colors scheme seemed very different to what I normally do. There was a vibrancy about what i saw that spoke of HOPE in a Light that was Alive. The one that particularly conveyed Hope is the third one, it shows a line of horizon emerging. The fifth one spoke to me straight away about staying on target, Eternity.

A few weeks later, I went to the Tate Modern to see Rothko's art, only because it was the only evening show I could get to in a short space of time. I knew nothing of his art and I thought it could be a cold experience.

As I entered the room, the first painting I saw and stood in front was the reverse of vision n°3. I could only stand there in my tears as I was faced with the representation of despair, the total contrary to what God had shown in vivsions of Hope. The rest of the show, I was walking in this environment of despair and could only understand why these told of his depression before his suicide. There was no hope in Rothko's latest works.

Highlights: moving around the hired tents, a river rining through the tents, my tent catching on fire, sandy fish and chips, James and Mark running to bathe in the cold sea, fantastic prophetic prayer ministry, brokeness as an overall theme, Mike Breen's storytelling, driving with the masterpacker Danny, making hot water bottles for Olivia, an impromptu tie-dye session with the kids, seeing longtime friends, Gwenael braving the weather in simple clothing(why? oh why?), Trevor's BBQ, the Robinson's quest for booster seats, and...

The Thursday evening session which was soooo packed, Katy and I made our way to last seats in a row. The woman sitting next to me left after a few minutes. Then, another one came to ask if the seat was free, she settled her stuff and started to worship. A few minutes later, she left too! Now, I know i didn't smell that bad as i had the time to take a shower that day. The seat was free the rest of the session and i could feel/see/hear someone else sitting there in the spiritual realm, how wonderful and comforting that presence was to me.
